Newsletter No.2

Welcome to my Ward D monthly newsletter.

Each month, I share updates from across our school communities, highlights from Board work, and reflections on what I’m learning in this role.

Public education is shaped by complex challenges and inspiring possibilities—and navigating both requires leadership that is brave enough to name what’s hard and curious enough to ask better questions.

My commitment is to show up with honesty, openness, and a willingness to learn alongside you. Thank you for staying connected, engaged, and invested in the success and well-being of every student and school community in Ward D and across EPSB.

Engaged. Involved. Committed.

Public education is strongest when communities stand together. Parents, students, teachers, and neighbours all play a vital role in shaping schools that reflect our shared values of equity, safety, and opportunity for every child. The fight for fair funding, reasonable class sizes, and inclusive learning environments cannot be won alone. It requires all of us, united in purpose.

Nickela is deeply committed to listening, learning, and engaging with everyone invested in public education. She believes that meaningful change begins with authentic collaboration, and she is ready to work side by side with our families, educators, and community members to ensure that every child has access to the education they deserve.

Ward D

Ward D lies within Treaty 6 territory - the traditional lands of many First Nations, including the Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Blackfoot, and Dene Peoples - and is part of the homeland of the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 4. We honour the Indigenous Peoples whose histories, languages, and cultures continue to enrich our communities and remind us of our shared responsibility to advance truth, reconciliation, and respectful relationships.

Straddling the North Saskatchewan River, Ward D includes 35 communities across both Edmonton’s south and north sides. From Abbottsfield and Gold Bar in the east to Windsor Park and Delton in the west. School sites in the ward range from planned future replacement schools to newer facilities, century-old historic buildings, and surplus sites.

There are 22 schools in Ward D offering diverse programming to meet the needs of students from all backgrounds - including language immersion, arts-focused curricula, science programming, online learning, specialized strategies and connections programs, and International Baccalaureate options.

We honour and respect the history, languages, ceremonies, and culture of the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit who call this territory home, and we recognize their enduring relationship with this land.
